‘Judgment’ Penalty Costs Ravens

Here we go again.

A year after being plagued by penalties, two questionable calls against the Ravens’ defense were costly again on Sunday, this time resulting in six decisive points in Baltimore’s 15-10 loss.

The call that will likely get the most attention came against Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs on a roughing the passer penalty. It helped Cincinnati record its fourth field goal, which gave the Bengals the lead for good.

After Baltimore surrendered a 60-yard kickoff return, Suggs seemed to make a big play for the defense by getting pressure on Palmer. Palmer got rid of the ball as Suggs dove at his chest and then No. 55’s momentum brought Palmer hard to the ground. Suggs helped Palmer off the turf.

But officials threw a flag claiming Suggs drove Palmer to the ground with excess force.

“To apply your body weight on the quarterback as you drive him into the ground is a judgment call, and that’s the way that I looked at it,” referee Gene Steratore said after the game.

Instead of a 2nd-and-10 from the 41, the Bengals had a first down on Baltimore’s 26-yard line. The Ravens held Cincinnati to a field goal four plays later, but it gave the Bengals a 12-10 lead with 4:38 remaining in the game.

“The NFL [is] definitely going to do their best to protect the guys that pay their bills, the quarterback,” said Suggs, who was also flagged for a controversial roughing the quarterback penalty in the Ravens’ regular season loss to Tom Brady and the Patriots last year.

“I was already engaged with him, so if I have to do the play over with him, I’d do it again. … It’s definitely up for speculation, but he made the call. Did we win or lose right there? Absolutely not.”

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh was visibly steamed on the sideline. Afterwards, he spoke about the penalty.

“I think it’s hard for us to determine right now what roughing the passer is,” Harbaugh said. “If that’s roughing the passer, how are you supposed to get Carson Palmer – a 250-pound quarterback – down other than tackling him? In the strike zone, and he took him to the ground. There were plenty of other times we couldn’t get him to the ground. It takes effort to get a guy to go to the ground.”

An earlier penalty on Ray Lewis started the controversy. Lewis blitzed from the right side and was cut at the knees by a Cincinnati blocker. As he rolled to the ground, Lewis’ foot caught Palmer’s, causing the quarterback to fall for an eight-yard loss.

That would have resulted in a fourth down and knocked Cincinnati out of field goal range, but after a lengthy discussion, referees stuck to their decision to flag Lewis.

Cincinnati was granted an automatic first down on the 32-yard line and kicked a 46-yard field goal to take a 9-7 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

“Six points was given off of B.S,” Lewis said. “It’s embarrassing that you can actually put them in field goal range off of two calls like that. They couldn’t get in the end zone by themselves. That’s why everybody straps on their helmets. If you’re going to earn it, earn it. They didn’t earn it today.”

Yesterday, 05:38 PMravens scored on one play...bengals made it easier for them with missed passes to wide open chad in endzone and they could have easily called passed interference when the db on owens didnt turn around to defend the ball.ball would have been on the one. and to cuse 92...benson ran 120 yds last year and i remember palmer leading a drive to win against the big D.0USMCSmith1044

Yesterday, 05:27 PM4 interceptions made it easier to lose, but that didn't beat us. Even with 4 INT's the bengals only earned 9 points...that's still a loss without referee help0haha81/85/9

Yesterday, 05:22 PMI\'m so tired of losing games because of refs. They gift Pitt a superbowl, and can\'t even get a call right in our games0SuRihtanil

Yesterday, 04:32 PMSo,you're 1-1 n your offense really tanked 2 games. We were 1 play away from 0-2 or 2-0.Hats off to our defense or it could have been devestating in both games. Our offense needs to step up as much as our defense does or no team will fear or respect us.Now the Browns might come in here n think they might have a shot at us.If we don't start scoring earlier in these games, our defense will be worn down by the second half.A blowout this Sunday at home is necessary to get a little confidence back.0BritishRaven

Yesterday, 04:11 PMYes the two calls were pivotal moments in the game, had they gone the other way the Ravens might have won. But they didn't lose us the game. The abismal offensive performance did. You have to do enough to win the game, and we didn't do that.0BETH NICKLES

Yesterday, 02:36 PMThese two bogus calls DID INDEED influence the game and cost us the 6 points... I agree with Ray Ray... Our D has held both the Bengals and the Jets to absolutely NO TD's.... They couldn't get into the endzone at all yesterday... and this actually helped insure that the Bengals get downfield.....0Raven4Life21

Yesterday, 02:22 PMi hate when it comes down to blown calls by the refs... yeah flacco was terrible.. but our defense won this game for us as they've done it a million times before... if i were cincy fans i'd be happy with the "W" but extremely pissed cuz it was NOT a credible win... our D won that game for us fair and square and there was no way they would have gotten those 6 points any other way... i know Flacco is to blame for the 4 INT's but even with the first 3 we STILL won that game... hats off to Cincy for playing a great game... but in my mind we still won... that was the most horrible roughing the passer call i had ever seen... there was no extra driving force into the ground by Suggs... it was a full speed tackle like any other tackle... and he engaged him with the ball still in Palmers hands... if you are gonna blow a call like that you can't do it in the 4th quarter in that situation... it COMPLETELY changed the outcome of the game and NOBODY can deny that... yeah there were plenty of other things that we could have done better especially Flacco but him alone did NOT lose us that game... he just helped cincy stay in the ball game... that Ref should rot in hell for such a terrible call and should NEVER ref again... this is a HUGE business and if you are gonna be a Referee you can't blow a call that bad... it shouldn't have even been a thought in his mind... you have two teams busting theirs butts out on that field for a "W" and you make a call like THAT!??!! ouch man... ouch...Page 1 of 12123NextLast
