Barter for progress


Work a deal out with a friend or co-worker where they give you something if you accomplish what it is you need to do. It can be anything from buying you a cookie, to cooking you dinner.
This is a common goal that is always done at anywhere in the workplace, or even out of it.  So basically, look at what you need to be done, and realize what you might need to be done in the future. And ask the same person that you had helped before to help you out. This can be used to make a friend in or out of work.

Start at the end


Ask yourself: "what affect would it have if I was finished with this?" If the project or problem you are currently faced with were finished and you were to look back at it, what would you ideally change?
Finding yourself in a jam, and not exactly sure what to, look at it as if the project is finished and done, and see what you had accomplished and then find what had went wrong, and how they all could be changed. And then go back and fix the problem. At least if you start at the end, and look at the problems in the beginning and finding a solution to solve the problem.

Reverse brainstorm


Reverse what it is you're trying to do and list out ways you could achieve it. Then reverse your problem ideas to see if any stand out as solutions to your original problem.
Just reverse the process of how you want to achieve your idea and see if there is anything that sticks out that you didn't think of before that might have changed your idea any.

Emphasize your flaws


What are your personal flaws? If you don't know, ask someone. Then evaluate what happens if you take your flaws and emphasize them in your situation or problem.
Just sit down with yourself, and really, really no lying to yourself!! I emphasize on that especially because its not goin to work if you be honest to yourself. And realize what happens when certain things happen. And do what you have to do make it better for yourself and the situation.

Apple iTunes Radio Offers Higher Royalties Than Pandora


iTunes Radio, pictured here, launches this fall, which is why Apple is courting independent labels to join the majors on the service -- but for Pandora, revelations about Apple's terms came at an inopportune time.
As Pandora defends itself from public charges from Pink Floyd that it is trying to skimp on royalty payments, Apple has made it known that it will pay out higher royalties than Pandora. Pandora is the biggest competitor to Apple’s as-yet unlaunched iTunes Radio service.
Apple offered terms that would, in iTunes Radio’s first year, pay each label 0.13 cents per play coupled with 15 percent of advertising revenue proportionate to the label’s share of music played via iTunes. By the second year those terms increase to 0.14 cents per listen plus 19 percent of associated ad revenue. Pandora pays about 0.12 cents per listen under government-set rates.
According to the leaked contracts, which are being sent to individual labels rather than a label consortium such as Merlin, Apple plans to determine how royalties are distributed which includes how many times listener’s hear a song coupled with how much advertising Apple is able to sell through its iAds program. Apple has also stated that it won’t pay royalties when listeners skip a song before it has played for 20 seconds.
Apple plans to push iTunes download sales through iTunes Radio, sweetening the deal for itself and copyright holders, who will benefit from those sales — one reason Apple could be willing to pay higher royalties than the default, government-set rate. Pandora’s Westergren shied away from a comparison between the two services, telling the Wall Street Journal, “It’s apples and oranges.”
Pandora — the putative “orange” in this scenario — was criticized by members of Pink Floyd for trying to get help in lobbying for to sue ASCAP for lower rates, and joined a group of over 130 other bands that stand in opposition to Pandora’s policies. (Pandora pays royalties under a government-set rate, unlike Slacker or Apple.) In their USA Today op-ed, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason members claim, “For almost all working musicians, it’s also a question of economic survival. Nearly 90 percent of the artists who get a check for digital play receive less than $5,000 a year. They cannot afford the 85 percent pay cut Pandora asked Congress to impose on the music community.”
Pandora vehemently refutes that it is lobbying for any such thing. Pandora founder Tim Westergren hit back in a blog post at what he described as “a lie manufactured by the RIAA and promoted by their hired guns to mislead and agitate the artist community,” and also sought to empathize with the supposedly dejected artists, writing, “As a long-time working musician myself, I fully understand their emotions and concerns.”
This debate over internet royalties began during the last millennium, and could well last until the next one. It’s a complicated situation for several reasons. AM/FM stations pay no performance royalties, for instance, and internet radio companies are free to negotiate directly with rightsholders, as Apple is doing, even though using its dominance in one market to gain an advantage in another (so-called “vertical integration“) might raise antitrust concerns. In other words, pass the popcorn; this thing is far from over.

Music schools might be great for really helping you fine-tune your musicianship skills, but there are some lessons that they don’t cover which you’ll need to know for your career. Here are six things that you should know that aren’t covered in curriculum:
How to Pitch Your Music: Pitching your band is one of the most important lessons to not only get your career started, but to sustain it. It’s the foundation for networking, booking shows, getting press, working with sponsors, and creating new fans.
How to Treat Other Bands: The music industry is a business that is all about relationships. Bottom line: don’t be a diva and don’t treat other bands like crap. They are your allies, not your competition. Learn the unspoken rules of how to treat a touring band. The better you treat your peers, the better off you’ll be.
Don’t Play too Often: I understand that when you first launch a band, you want to play out as often as possible. However, there are dangers to overplaying. Learn to walk that fine line so you don’t end up annoying promoters or getting burnt out.
How to Handle Your Gear: More specifically, you should learn how to lift heavy objects properly. Between hauling amps, merchandise, and other gear, there’s a lot of potential for injury. While you are at, get yourself some good ear plugs and protect your hearing too.
Go With the Flow: When you are touring often, it’s inevitable that something will go wrong. Learn how to deal with the situations and make the best of things when they do. Prepare for emergencies, such as the vehicle breaking down (you might even consider taking some basic auto repair lessons).
Learn the Right Things: We all want an easy solution: a nice record label deal, a headlining music festival slot, a viral video, etc. but these things are overrated. Don’t expect someone else to make your music career for you. Focus on the right things and build your career the right way.

1) What device(s) do you use to listen to music?
iPhone when I run. iPhone w/bluetooth connection in my car. iTunes streamed through AppleTV and home audio system (Sony amp with PSB speakers) at home.
2) What streaming music service(s) do you use most often?
I mostly listen to my own collection and watch videos on YouTube. I occasionally use Pandora.

Today is my birthday and, each year, I love to take a moment to reflect on the year behind, the state of the music business, and my love for music.
A few months ago, while everyone in the world I know went to SXSW, I took myself to a quiet beach for a few days to think, to write, and to and recharge.
While I was boarding the plane, my friend Marcus Taylor emailed, asking me to contribute a quote for his article “30 Pieces Of Advice From Music Industry Entrepreneurs” I fired it off and thought nothing of it.
During my break, I read Sheryl Sandberg’s ‘Lean In’ and it got me thinking about being a woman in this business. Then Marcus’s article came out and I was the only woman included in it. Oops. A wonderful and telling string of comments appeared and the seed for this article was planted.
Here is the reality: Women are still under represented all over this business and sadly women in the music industry are practically invisible online.

When I searched for “Music Degree Programs” I instantly found 204 colleges and universities in the US alone that offer degrees. I shudder to think how many young women are Googling “Female Music Executive” only to find Katy Perry’s naked ass (no offense Katy, your butt is great but… REALLY?)
So I put a call out on the Women In Music List and emailed every woman I could think of and I asked for female entrepreneurs to SHOW THEMSELVES (and show they did) lo an behold 51 Women heeded my call

Samsung Buys 1 Million Copies Of Jay-Z New Album "Magna Carta Holy Grail" [VIDEO]
In a deal that sources put at $5 million, Samsung has purchased 1 million copies of Jay-Z’s next album, entitled “Magna Carta Holy Grail”. A million Samsung Galaxy smartphone users will receive a free copy on July 4th, 72 hours prior the official release. It's not yet clear that these million copies will count towards Jay-Z's first week positions on Billboard's Nielson Soundscan charts. The rumored $5 per copy price would theoretically allow the business savvy star to qualify, virtually guaranteeing a #1 debut.

Samsung owners will receive “Magna Carta Holy Grail” via an app, which can be downloaded starting June 24th. It will offer what the company calls an "unprecedented inside look into the album personal stories and inspiration" and unlock the album for play on July 4, three days before it officially goes on sale for the non-Galaxy owning world.
The new album and the Sunsung deal were unveiled with this three minute commercial debuted during the NBA Finals on Sunday. In the video and accompanying site Jay-Z repeats the theme that the internet has changed everything, and thus, "We need to write new rules."

Billboard Reminds How Antiquated Their Charts Are With Rejection Of 1M Jay-Z Samsung Albums
The rules are the rules; or at least that's what Billboard Magazine decided when eliminating the 1 million albums that Jay-Z is distributing free to Samsung users from chart calculations. The decision, which netted Jay-Z a rumored $5 million, could cost the rapper/entrepreneur a spectacular #1 debut, as well as, a multi-platinum award for his wall.
While Billboard Editorial Director Bill Werde laid out the magazine's reasoning logically and thoughtfully, he also unknowingly reminded everyone that, despite some innovation, Billboard's charts are relics of another era.
For while Billboard's rules are Billboard's rules, the success or failure of Jay'Z's new album is far more about fan reaction and play counts, than it is about traditional sales.
In letter published to today, Werde wrote:
"...it wasn't as simple as you might think to turn down Jay-Z when he requested that we count the million albums that Samsung "bought" as part of a much larger brand partnership, to give away to Samsung customers. True, nothing was actually for sale - Samsung users will download a Jay-branded app for free and get the album for free a few days later after engaging with some Jay-Z content. The passionate and articulate argument by Jay's team that something was for sale and Samsung bought it also doesn't mesh with precedent."
